Trans-Mississippi Musings Press is pleased to announce a new book, Battle of Westport, October 23, 1864: A Walking Tour of the Battlefield South of Brush Creek in Kansas City, Missouri, written by yours truly, Dick Titterington, aka theCivilWarMuse. On October 23, 1864, Confederate Brig. Gen. Jo Shelby faced off against Union Maj. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis on the prairie south of Brush Creek near Westport, Missouri. By midafternoon the Confederate forces were retreating south, having failed to defeat the Union army. This guide contains walking tour of sites tied to the key events during the fierce contest that took place south of Brush Creek. The self-guided tour is a walking tour, although many of the tour stops can be reached by car. This tour contains 13 tour stops and is located in and around Jacob L. Loose Park in Kansas City, Missouri. The battle on October 23 south of Brush Creek took place over a very large area, so this tour does not include stops for everything that occurred on that date. The tour only includes the locations within a reasonable walking distance (3.5 to 4 miles) and can be completed in a single morning or afternoon. Last changed: Oct 14 2017 at 3:49 PM Back |
